That's fun, now and again, but my heart lies with home waters, and to a great extent, in looking back on a life of fishing, and what to expect for the years to come. It's a bittersweet journey, and both aspects of that are a good thing. Stokes writes with humor, wit, and an obvious love for the art and craft of fishing. Trout Friends and Other Riff-Raff was an incredibly delightful listen. It was such fun listening to these tales. One of my favorites, (all were excellent) was the moving car horn. All are true gems and enjoyable for anyone. I actually love fishing and have been trout fishing but have never had quite the joy that these stories bring. Bill Stokes is a brilliant storyteller and I'd highly recommend not letting this one get away.
David Stifel's narration was equally brilliant. He was present in the moment and read these stories in a way that made me feel as if I were a part of them. Just wonderful!

I'm not much of a factual reader and prefer my books to be fiction, as life is hard and it's nice to escape, but this author's work has managed to bring me away from every day life and become immersed in the tales he weaves. He has a way with words that are effortless and makes for a very entertaining and interesting read.
This one is no different. It's a collection of stories, well memories would best describe them, about a past time that he is passionate about. Memories of years and people gone by but all with the same passion for this hobby. I'm not much of a fan of fishing, nor do I know much about it, but these little tales were entertaining and I enjoyed listening to them. They didn't grab me as much as some of this author's previous work but it was still worth a listen.
David Stifel was amazing reading this. He seemed to enjoy the book and it showed through his narration. His tones and cadences were awesome and he really brought the anecdotes to life.

This is an collection of stories about fishing. Stokes starts the book complaining about age and how it has affected one of his favorite hobbies, to continue telling how he discovered it and all the people that were important in his life regarding fishing trips. The book is full of funny and endearing anecdotes which will delight everyone, and not just those into fishing. The book is not as much about fishing as about the experience around fishing the trips, the friends, the problems, and especially about the inexorable passage of time.
David Stifel really becomes Bill Stokes in this book, and his voice and modulation makes the audiobook a unique experience. It is like listening to your old grandpa telling you never ending stories about the important things in life. It really enhances the book.
This is the second book by Bill Stokes that I have read, and I have enjoyed them both immensely. In my case, this is saying a lot, since I am not a fisherman and was only fishing once in my life, and that when I was about ten years old. (I didn't catch anything.) Bill has a wonderful way of telling a story, making a scene, an event, an incident come alive in such a way that the reader can vividly picture what is going on. Moreover, his word pictures, turns of phrases, sense of irony, understatements (and overstatements) all contribute immensely to making what he writes thoroughly enjoyable and engrossing.
"Trout Friends and other Riff-Raff Stories About the Passion and Madness of Fishing" presents vignettes of his trout-fishing experiences at various stages of his life through his later adult years. It is clear that the love of fishing that was instilled in him when he wasn't yet in grade school has stayed with him his entire life and, along with writing, is one of his great passions. And over the years it is obvious that he has met and come to appreciate other equally passionate trout fishers of all sorts and has thoroughly enjoyed the bond they have shared through their common interest.
This book was originally published in 2000 and re-released this year (2017). Its first chapter ("Trout Flounderers") has been written for this new edition. It is clear that at 85 years of age Bill Stokes is still as passionate as he ever was about trout fishing.
Excellent reading while waiting for the unforgiving March freeze to relent and allow me to go outside and shadow cast, preparing for the real thing as the opener approaches...
Bill stokes is an excellent writer and fisherman. This book will be read many, many times and his stories will be retold to my fishermen friends. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fishing.
What a great read. Made me think about the experiences I have had while fishing. Especially with my dad who taught me to fish and had the patience to endure my mistakes.
